During the second half of 2020, we drove the latest Jaguar F-Type R Coupé to Franschhoek, where we met up with Graham Warsop – the proud owner of a 1955 D-Type Replica. It was an experience that bridged the gap between two worlds; that crossed the generational width between two of Jaguar’s finest hours.

In the past, the D-Type was a menace on the racetrack. It won numerous races, raked in the accolades, and immediately established itself as an instant classic in the automotive world. According to Warsop, an original D-type fetched €16 million at a 2016 auction, which is far more than what the average car fanatic can afford. His car, says Warsop, is a replica of the car that won Le Mans in 1955.

Warsop drives his D-Type every week, cruising down the quaint town’s main road to onlookers’ delight.

Thundering on

Heading to Warsop’s place, we saddled up the F-Type R Coupé and pointed its nose towards the destination. The serene comfort of the F-Type impressed on the drive, with the quad exhausts’ sonorous growl impressing with every jab of the throttle.

Priced from R2.5 million, the R Coupé is powered by a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine. Producing 423kW and 700Nm, the sports car can haul its 1743kg weight to 100km/h from standstill in 3.7 seconds. And if you’re brave enough, keeping your foot planted will see you reach the 300km/h top speed.

Jaguar’s eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels, which is a blessing considering that the car must contain all that force. Jaguar opted against enabling the halo model of its halo sports car with a rear-wheel drive setup, given that the all-wheel drive setup provides a more significant safety net should thing go awry.

The R Coupé is the fastest, most potent F-Type available in South Africa, but will be surpassed by the SVR model when it comes to market in the not-too-distant future.
