Survey points to magnificent seven vans for reliability

IF YOU’RE thinking of getting a new van or pick-up truck, vehicle leasing outfit Vanarama has compiled a list of what it says are the most reliable models.

The firm’s experts analysed data from a number of sources to come up with the best light commercial vehicles across four categories.

Information was taken from Fleet News magazine’s FN50 Survey – which asks the 50 top leasing companies what vans on their fleets they find to be the most reliable.

But Vanarama also checked out claim data from Warrantywise and MOT testing statistics from the Department for Transport.

The best small vans were deemed to be the Fiat Doblo and Volkswagen Caddy. The Italian machine scored well for MOT pass rates and has a five-year/100,000-mile warranty.

The VW, meanwhile, is a favourite with leasing companies and comes packed with tech, a fresh cab environment and a new range of powertrains.

The Ford Transit Custom is still the best-selling van in the UK, popular for its style, top-notch cabin, efficient engines and great load-carrying ability – and was a medium-sized van winner with Vanarama.

Sitting alongside it was the new Vauxhall Vivaro medium panel van, which impressed Vanarama because of the number of checks and balances it has to go through just to get out of the factory gate.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter was named a large van winner due to its three-year/unlimited mileage warranty and impressive fleet credentials.

It was joined by the VW Crafter, which achieved second place across all van sectors, according to data from extended warranty provider Warrantywise.

Meanwhile, the Toyota Hilux took the pick-up truck crown as it comes with a five-year/100,000-mile warranty despite the strain that regular off-road driving can put on such a vehicle.
