The SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19 disease, has continued to outsmart scientists since the very beginning of the pandemic. But as time progresses, as more is learnt about its genetic structure and how it operates, we’re moving closer towards developing effective vaccines and treatments.

In a new study, researchers discovered something quite profound after honing in on the molecular mechanisms at work at the cellular level during infection: the virus, they said, can tamper with the cell’s hardware to outsmart the immune system.

Their paper, published in Nature, explains how SARS-CoV-2 is essentially a triple threat, as it uses a multi-pronged strategy to replicate itself quickly and efficiently inside the body’s cells, and heads for the exit before it is detected by the immune system.
